Re: [-empyre-] summ(er)ing up thank you
hello, goodbye,
thanks to Melinda for the invitation to participate this month,
although it has been difficult at times to abandon the sunshine for the
ole cathode glow.
As danny wrote, a list (and particularly one i usually only lurk on,
like empyre) is a strange place, often with an enormous disjuncture
with the everyday [as when i met danny on friday night at a party, and
we DID NOT SPEAK about anything related to our online disagreements].
the first time i ever posted was on ada, the list i set up - and my
mode of participation is (apart from occasional grumpiness) founded in
an idea of hospitality - on good days i see myself as a hostess,
floating round, topping up drinks, introducing shy guests and, maybe,
as a way of starting off, talking about the weather. as a result, my
posts are a bit over-cheery and generalised.
as a sculptor with an installational practice, thinking about space and
the specificities of embodied environments is key. I am interested in
environmental restoration because, for me it is embued with a utopian
spirit and an ethos of guardianship, and because the idea of imagining
a land without human inhabitants is a rich paradox, a (far from
historically innocent) way of thinking about that nature/culture divide.
preoccupation with biosecurity, the feral and the invasive are the
distopian flipside.
